Bike + Roll to School Week

Mark your calendars for April 24 to April 28. It's time for Brightworks families to gear up for Bike + Roll Week!

This annual event encourages students and their families to ditch their cars and opt for alternative modes of transportation, such as bikes and scooters. By promoting healthy habits, environmental sustainability, and community engagement, Bike + Roll Week is an excellent way for families to get active and explore the neighborhood. At school this week, we'll build community through biking, ride bikes to the beach for lunch, and even do some still life drawing of our wheels. So, let's get those helmets on and start rolling!

To add onto the biking and rolling fun, there's a special event to celebrate the JFK Promenade being car-free for three years on Friday, April 28 from 4:30-6:30pm. There will be activities for all ages as well as food trucks, as we celebrate the third anniversary of this being a car-free space. The event is co-hosted by Walk SF, Bike Coalition, KidSafe, and Church of 8 Wheels. Here's a link with more info!

What is JFK Promenade?
A car-free route along a portion of JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park has existed since 1967, when street closures began every Sunday, on many Saturdays and during holidays and special events, allowing park visitors of all ages and abilities to use the roadway free of car traffic. In 2020, as the city grappled with the COVID pandemic, this portion of JFK, along with other roads in the park, were closed to vehicle traffic seven days a week.

On April 28, 2022, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved Mayor London Breed’s legislation to ensure JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park remains vehicle-free permanently. The legislation, co-sponsored by Supervisors Matt Haney, Rafael Mandelman, and Dean Preston, greenlit approximately 55 improvements to make the park easier to access for seniors, the disability community, and those who live further away.

In November 2022, San Francisco voters reaffirmed the previous legislation, making the new JFK Promenade a permanent car-free route enjoyed by a wide range of visitors. Along the route, visitors can enjoy art installations, public pianos, rest stops and enhanced entrances featuring seating and lawn games, and live music.

Safe Routes to School’s annual Bike & Roll to School Week event is for students city-wide to celebrate getting around under your own power.
