A note from Gever on BoxBots:
In the coming weeks the boxbot team and I will be spending time with each of the bands, sharing and discovering the possibilities of this cardboard robot. Boxbot is an ongoing project to develop a robot that is accessible, affordable, and reliably creates moments of self-directed exploration. Boxbot was completely developed at Brightworks/Tinkering School by students, and is now in its fourth major iteration. This year, over 300 boxbots have been deployed in Title-1 schools in central California.
What I love about the boxbot is that, unlike the classroom robots available today, it invites and inspires modification. Students immediately start drawing on it, hot-gluing things to it, and adding new features and capabilities.
In fact, if you drive a boxbot off the table and manage to break something, the replacement parts are available online from dozens of retailers - because it is made from commonly available off-the-shelf components. With multiple ways to program it, our youngest students all the way up through High Schoolers have been engaged with our growing catalog of provocations and challenges, and it seems to catalyze endlessly evolving self-determined goals.
