Expo Night 2024 - Underground
What is Exposition?
Exposition is a cornerstone of the Brightworks Arc. It is a time when the community gathers together to witness the culmination of months of exploration and project work. During Exposition week there are two stages in which the students display their work. On their band’s presentation day, at least two other bands gather along with their parents to watch the students give a presentation about their work. After the presentation there is a Q & A period. This takes place during school hours.
After all of the bands have presented, there is Exposition Night, or “Expo Night.” This evening open house is a celebration of the students’ projects and allows parents to see all of the other bands’ work. Students display their work on tri-fold presentation boards and stand by their work to answer questions. Because projects differ from arc to arc and may require different presentation formats, these guidelines are always malleable and may range from documentaries or interactive exhibits to podcasts and film screenings.
A note from Mary Catherine…
Spring 2024 Expo Night
Spring Expo has always felt to me as equal part a marker of growth and celebration. While many schools are winding down in May, Brightworks truly ramps up. Students are pushing their skills all the way to the finish line as they strive to finish ambitious builds, create museum like displays, and teach the community their newly explored topics of interest.
I’ve always delighted is watching Quartz check off a number of firsts as they take on more responsibility with their spring project: first time honing a personal project idea, first time riding the wave of trying and trying again for 6 weeks straight, first time trying working with a group, and/ or first time crafting a presentation to share with the community. I also feel so much joy watching former students demonstrate new found expansiveness. From the student who at age eight tore up self assessments now at age 14 proudly writing a deep reflection of his learning and personal journey over the years to the student who at age 7 was just beginning to play with writing as a form for expression write a full, detailed report of a scientific concept at age 13.
Expo is simply magical. I always find myself walking away curious about a million new ideas. Medicinal plants, memory, Hades, banned books, caves, oh my!
As a school striving to inspire curiosity amongst our students, Expo pushes that curiosity into the world. it’s impossible to walk away without 100 new questions popping into your head, no matter your age. Expo sends the community into the summer full of ideas, wonder and appreciation.
