Holi Celebration
Last Fridays Holi Celebration was a resounding success!
The annual Hindu celebration called Holi is also known as the festival of colors. Beginning in India millennia ago, this cultural event is celebrated by millions of people throughout the Indian diaspora all over the world. Holi is celebrated on the last full moon in the lunar month of Phalguna and ushers in spring. It marks the end of winter and honors the triumph of good over evil. Celebrants light bonfires, throw colorful powder called gulal, eat sweets, and dance to traditional folk music.
Thank you to Shirvan and his team of volunteer parents for leading us in this spring day of color and dance at Brightworks!
We had a lucky reprieve from the rain and were able to celebrate in the spring sunshine. Our youngest bands led up to the day by reading a couple of books about Holi including Festival of Colors. You can learn more about Holi Celebrations here.
At our school, the celebration included a Bollywood dance class that was out of this world. All students participated in a session of dance led by Sun Bollywood, who taught each age group of students a different routine of dance movements in the bollywood dancing style. This was followed by an afternoon of tie dye, face painting, henna art, seed bombs, jewelry making, mandalas and rangoli, and colorful tissue paper flowers, then all culminating in playing Holi.
We were all drenched in blues and greens and pinks and smiles. Holi hai!
