Neurodiversity groups

October is Dyslexia and ADHD awareness month!

At Brightworks, we strive to celebrate neurodiversity all year long and this month is a unique opportunity to lift up the strengths and talents of our learners with dyslexia and adhd.

Please take a moment to check out these resources to learn more and celebrate the gifts of dyslexia and adhd.

For those of us parenting neurodivergent humans, check out the Understood website for a wealth of info, support, and community resources!  CHC also has robust offerings of parent groups for a variety of neurodivergence.

Amidst this month of celebration and visibility, we launched our neurodivergent student affinity groups!  These totally optional groups have met for the first time over the last couple of weeks, and will offer a space for students who identify as neurodivergent (whether diagnosed or undiagnosed) to gather together to talk about their experiences, feel a sense of support and community, and engage with their identity in ways that feel meaningful to them - whether it be through conversation, activities, larger projects, or just by being together.

This session, our groups have been hard at work creating a dyslexia and adhd strengths wall.  Here’s a little preview…more to come!

Also, as we approach the end of October, it’s important to remember that Halloween can be a mixed bag (pun intended) for some kids who find themselves on the more sensory sensitive side of the beautiful, neurodiverse spectrum. Here are some tips and ideas for a sensory friendly Halloween!
