exploring force

Tuesday continued in the kid-led explorations of yesterday. The Flying Fish explored the force that pulls objects to the ground, the Ssalson Raptors experimented with swings at the park, and the Undead Goats have discovered the excitement of reverse-motion videos. The Ssalson Raptors spent three hours at the park today with Chane! They also worked on drawing their park experience and counting in groups when they got back.DSCN1064DSCN1059DSCN1272DSCN1284DSCN1282The Flying Fish's experimentation with falling objects resulted in incredible leaps of understanding of what brings objects and humans crashing to the ground when caught in mid-air.DSCN1263Mackenzie writes, "Logan jumped to the word parachute and immediately got working on a makeshift paper parachute for his tennis ball. His first prototype was just a ball taped to a paper, but this wasn't quite enough to slow down the ball, so he taped wings to the central paper. Aidan and Ninja Ben were also very excited about making parachutes, and each of them had a different design.Meanwhile, Lola remembered how the feathers she found in the park the day before had vibrated in her hand when she moved them through the air, so she attached her feathers to a piece of paper. She explained, "When I drop the paper, it will want to go down, but the wind will push it up and the feathers will flap like a bird." As everyone pursued their avenues of inquiry, Clementine and Logan started jumping off of our falling stage with their elbows in their shirts yelling "I am flying! Look I am a baby bird, Splat!!!" And thus language around flight was introduced!"DSCN1260Mackenzie also wrote that Bruno was fascinated by the idea that two different objects fall to the ground at the same time. With Natasha as his research assistant, he started to make theories about why this is. After dropping a cork and a penny he explained, "The penny is heavier but the cork is bigger. That is why the drop at the same time." To test this idea, he gathered two objects of the same size and shape but different weights and they both hit the ground at the same time. Then he gathered two objects with the same weight and different shapes and guess what they hit the ground at the same time. The Fish began to think about gravity yesterday and will continue to explore that force for the next few days. The Undead Goats went to the park and created videos like this to explore movement both forward and backward using movie editing software. One of these days I'll have to train Miss Guinea Pig to help me with the blog.D7K_5986
