trying new things

Magical, wonderful Community Friday! These days are so different and unique in how the kids, given a choice amongst all the experiences that the space offers, choose to focus and work on projects of their own choosing and discover things they didn't think they were interested in before. We all get to explore a different routine and way of doing things. After a morning of capoeira, we broke up into the space for Open Explore.IMG_2382IMG_2386D7K_2909IMG_2390D7K_2912D7K_2925D7K_2924D7K_2934D7K_2944We had our first family prepare hot lunch for Community Friday. Bruno Kai and Natasha Mei's family made an incredible Malaysian-Californian meal for us: lor bak (pork rolls), nasi lemak (coconut rice) with ikan bilis (salted anchovies), gulai (Malaysian curry) with green beans and hard boiled eggs, and sour mango with sweet sauce to finish. Wow and yum! The kids did a great job at being brave when they were faced with new and different food and there were plenty of pleased bellies when we broke for park.IMG_2401D7K_2981IMG_2511IMG_2428Discoveries and collaborative projects - so many things to see and do and be excited about.IMG_2771IMG_2777D7K_2972Brightworks is closed next week, but not for a holiday - we're all (students and staff) headed out to Mendocino for a week of outdoor education. This camping trip has been exciting, terrifying, anxiety-ridden, and highly anticipated for weeks! There will be so many new things to try for the kids who both have and have not been away from home before. We can't wait to head out to the wilderness to bond and come together as a school. I can't guarantee blog posts during that time, since there will be no internet access, but there will be plenty of pictures and stories to share when we get back!
