Body Arc Begins!
Body Arc is here!
From exploring skulls in Onyx and Quartz to thinking about our body’s systems in Sapphire and Garnet to exploring Polar Bears in Lapis, the whole school is buzzing with curiosity about all things physical.
In middle school science student's have been exploring Punnett Squares and recessive versus dominant genes.
In Quartz we’ve also started our body study by exploring genetics. 7-9 year olds love a good acronym, so they were especially curious and stoked to think about DNA.
We listened to a podcast about how dog breeding is a kind of artificial selection, identified different kinds of teeth in various skulls, started an adaptation museum in the band space, and explored how the wide range of bird beaks correspond to different kinds of food birds eat. We’ve also been thinking about how we can learn about everybody through interviewing and went to Golden Gate Park Friday to interview community members we will depict in portraits a la Faith Ringold.
Lastly in Quartz we’ve been writing reviews and awards to learn the skill of evaluating a body of work when expressing our important opinions like how Patatas Bravas are the best french fry, the best pokemon (right now about 5 are tied for best band wide), and Brightworks getting the award for best school.
Body is proving to be a great keyhole offering opportunities to explore bodies of water (like Garnet's floating exploration), community, in addition to all the things that make up animal (including human) bodies.
