Apprenticeship club
Education takes on various forms at Brightworks, and student agency is not just encouraged; it's celebrated. This year, inspired by the enthusiasm of a young leader, Charlie, our collaborative apprenticeship program with Rob, our shop and art collaborator, has taken root.
Read more about the Apprenticeship Club, driven by curiosity and a desire to contribute — it exemplifies the essence of hands-on, student-driven learning.
Background
Our shop and art collaborator, Rob, started an apprenticeship program at Brightworks this year. It was inspired by, and in collaboration with, lead foreman, Charlie, a 10 year old student in Quartz band.
Rob and Charlie hit it off immediately when they met in 2021, and are excited to work together to establish and grow the apprenticeship program. Charlie has played a crucial role in recruiting his bandmates to find out who else might be interested in joining the program. In cooperation with Mary Catherine, collaborator with Quartz Band, the apprentice program now has dedicated time each week to devote to projects around our school.
Club Adventures
In the initial weeks, the Apprenticeship Club delved into the basics, from identifying hand tools to understanding the intricacies of power tools. Each member maintained individual notebooks, charting their exploration of tools and their functionalities. Week by week, the club's activities progressed, culminating in their first on-site assignment – installing artwork in the Young Gems building.
This hands-on experience emphasized the importance of their skills in contributing to the Brightworks community. Using levels, tape measures, and keen eyes, the club meticulously laid out artwork on walls and countertops, bringing creativity to life in our school environment.
From Lasers to Layouts: Exploring the Craftsmanship
Beyond the conventional, Rob introduced the club to a laser level, unraveling the mysteries of precision in construction. Door openings were scrutinized for plumb and true, and the ornate ceiling grid, a nod to our building’s historic roots, was examined for symmetry. The students learned the language of craftsmanship – Plumb, Level, Square, and layout – terms that resonated with newfound knowledge.
Currently framing a 6' x 6' wall, the Apprenticeship Club is set to venture into window installation, expanding their hands-on expertise. Rob's infectious enthusiasm echoes through each session, setting the stage for the club's next exciting chapter – reading blueprints.
Nurturing Skills, Shaping Futures
The Apprenticeship Club at Brightworks isn't just about learning tools and techniques; it's about fostering a mindset of exploration, collaboration, and community engagement. In the evolving narrative of our school, this club stands as a testament to the power of student agency – where curiosity transforms into skills, and skills become the foundation for a future shaped by innovation and craftsmanship. Stay tuned for the continuing adventures of our young apprentices as they embark on new projects and discoveries in the world of construction and creativity.
