We don't leave connection to chance

You may have noticed that our first weeks at Brightworks look, from the outside, like a lot of games, walks, shared meal time, and low-stakes creative play. That is entirely by design.

Research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education shows that social-emotional belonging is the prerequisite for cognitive risk-taking. Before a student can safely operate a chop saw, defend a design decision, or critique a peer's essay, they must first know (in their body, not just their head) that they are safe in their school.

So the first month of school, we haven't just been "getting to know each other." We've been co-creating a culture of psychological safety that will sustain the high-level learning to come. The play you're seeing now is the foundation the rigor will stand on later. It's some of the most important work we do all year.
